Fashion Read: New African Fashion

Helen Jennings's new book New African Fashion showcases African designers, models, and street style bloggers. Jenings, who is the editor of award-winning ARISE magazine highlights numerous talents including  Duro Olowu, Jewel by Lisa, Black Coffee, and Eric Raisina. The book, released last October is available for purchase on Amazon.

From Africa-inspired to African-made, this guide is the first to celebrate a new wave of fashion designers who are emerging on the global stage. Ever since the late 1960s when Yves Saint Laurent and Paco Rabanne presented African-inspired collections, the textiles, details, and colors of Africa have moved into the realm of high fashion. In the past few years, young designers from the continent itself have emerged as people to watch in the fashion world. Helen Jennings, editor of award-winning ARISE magazine, offers in this book a brief history of African fashion, beauty and style, follows its influence on modern designers, and spotlights the best designers, photographers, and models from across the continent and the African diaspora. Profiling popular lines such as Duro Olowu, Jewel by Lisa, Black Coffee, and Eric Raisina, Jennings explores the myriad reasons why African fashion is having its moment in the sun. She shows show designers are looking beyond clichés of the African aesthetic by embracing both traditional and contemporary fabrics and garments, and how the passion for ethically and environmentally conscious clothing is fueling this trend. As colorful and exciting as the fashions it features, this volume will appeal to anyone interested in following the world's most exciting new fashion development.

Designers: Jewel By Lisa's SS 2012 Vintage Love Collection

If you paid any attention to the ARISE Made In Africa Spring 2012 Fashion shows at NYFW, you would have noticed Lisa Folwaiyo's Spring Summer 2012 Vintage love collection. The lookbook is here and its as colorful and glamourous as it was on the runway.
The collection is described as "A time characterized by independence and growth, a time of change and promise. With the emergence of great novelists Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka and the development of musical genres highlife and afro-beat with the masters Victor Uwaifo and Fela Kuti danced and swayed to at soirees; a time when modern architectural influences paved new streets – this collection immerses itself in this time."
Its a blend of ethereal fabrics, ankara menswear and colorful pieces! As an avid fan of dresses, i must say the gowns are really calling out to me!

Check out this exclusive behind the scenes video of designer Lisa Folawiyo talking about the creative process behind the collection and preparing for the show! Check out more pictures at Style Pantry.

Style Inspiration: All Black With A Pop Of Color

As much as i love wearing every color of the rainbow, i still appreciate the allure of an all black outfit. In order to avoid coming off as the undertaker, its always best to add a pop of color to your outfit. It could be a pair of colored heels, handbag, or a bright colored blazer. Below are some items i picked out in Shoes, Blazers and Handbag.

Oroma Elewa, Vogue’s Rising Style Star of 2011

From Vogue :

Oroma Elewa
As the editor of Pop’Africana, Nigerian-born Oroma Elewa brings the vibrant cultures and styles of Africa to an international audience. “Natural tastemaker” only begins to describe Elewa’s élan (she founded Pop’Africana with no publishing experience); her independent voice and sleek ensembles make this newcomer seem like a seasoned professional. She is often inspired by patterns from her home in Africa; brilliantly colored prints on turbans and frocks are her personal hallmark. Outside fashion shows, street-style bloggers swarm to her, but Elewa always appears at ease and on the verge of laughter. Her bright disposition and knack for graphic getups are what makes this polished editor pop.

Power Shoulders

With all the Colorblocking and "eclectic" style that is always rampant on Nigerian social event red carpets, its nice to see someone go the simplicity route and hit it out of the park. From the blazer to the handbag, this outfit is casual chic at its best.
